## Description

**NOTE** If you receive the older (2021) Fourth Edition - this is desertcart's mistake - not mine! You should promptly return the Fourth Edition for a Fifth Edition replacement (free return shipping, free replacement). Please do not leave negative feedback because of desertcart's shipping mistake - I have no control over this, but they will replace the wrong edition with the correct edition if you return it for a replacement. I am VERY sorry about this - I have been fighting with desertcart for weeks and their customer service for authors like me is terrible! This is not the typical "question-answer-question-answer" text-only format. This book is often referred to as the “Cliffs Notes” for the private pilot checkride. This is the prep and study guide that will help you ace your checkride! Most material is presented in easy-to-flashcard and memorize charts, diagrams and mnemonics. The book begins by outlining the steps to take prior to your checkride under the latest ACS including hours, training, required logbook endorsements, and then explains the rest of the exam procedure which concludes with the debriefing. The study guide then goes into greater detail for each anticipated area of the checkride including: 1. checklists to memorize (and those not to memorize); 2. airspace and VFR minimums; 3. weather (reports, clouds, winds aloft, pressure systems, thunderstorms, the GFA weather chart website, types of fog, etc.), 4. navigation, including: types of navigation, lost procedures, VOR navigation, useful websites, NOTAMs, step-by-step instructions for completing a full navigation log, etc.); 5. safety & wellness (common in-flight sicknesses, rules for scuba divers, in-depth explanation of sensory illusions, etc.); 6. airport signs (including marshaling signals and a complete color runway diagram, etc.); 7. documents & inspections (learn an easier way to remember “TOMATOFLAMES”); 8. performance (including an explanation of leaning, and detonation vs. pre-ignition); 9. communications (towered airports, airspace transitions, calling FSS from an RCO, Class C procedure, activating flight plans, requesting flight following, etc.); 10. passenger briefing (including a sample briefing for your knee board); 11. maneuvers, takeoffs & landings (including a one-page maneuver reference card, plus a one-page list of all ACS maneuvers, takeoffs, landings, etc. which should be used during your final 3 hours of exam training with your CFI); 12. special emphasis areas (although they are now incorporated into the ACS, you should still be familiar with these areas because they are inherently tested throughout the exam) There is also a quick-reference flow chart for the risk management expectations; 13. the “other things to study” chapter is chock-full of the miscellaneous areas that you will be expected to know such as airspeeds, altitudes, stall/spin awareness & recovery, carb icing, slips, lapse rates, V-speeds, unusual attitude recovery, SVFR, pitotstatic system, left-turn tendencies, a detailed engine diagram with fourteen questions you should be able to answer, and much more; 14. select FAR/AIM summaries (the select rules you should be most familiar with); 15. three full-color sectional chart quizzes (with answer keys); 16. a chapter on “going the extra mile” and finally a detailed list of what should (probably) be in your flight bag. You will notice that this book is not hundreds of pages, nor is it priced as high as other books on this topic. The length is purposefully limited because you cannot effectively study and memorize hundreds of pages prior to your practical test. In addition, the size is such that you can easily take it with you wherever you go and study when time permits.

Review: Ttightly packed with memory aids and pearls of wisdom - It's a thin book tightly packed with memory aids and pearls of wisdom. Good to review just before the checkride and also for biannual reviews. The color print is well done. Highly recommend.
Review: Useful for a new CFI - I purchased this book as a quick way to brush up on the fundamentals and find holes in my own knowledge while preparing for my CFI. It was an excellent guide to efficiently refresh my memory on most of the regulations & required actions for private pilots. I got my PPL nearly ten years ago and my recent commercial training sometimes shot over some of the basic knowledge I had gotten rusty on over the years. This is a great book for reinforcing your foundation and bringing to light weak areas that may require more study out of the larger textbooks (yet at the same time doesn't require you to constantly "refer to..."). I think this would be a great book for a student to read in the last few weeks (in conjunction with the Private Pilot Oral Exam Guide) before the practical exam. It covers just about all the "must know" stuff and throws in a few pearls. Highly recommend.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The go bible to understand and review for your checkride
*by S***E on November 19, 2017*

I never writes review but Virgil did such a great job putting this together that I had to. I’m the kind of guy that will Buy all kinds of book but never end up finishing reading them because they are either too long, or too boring or too complex. This book is just perfect, it will sum up what you need to know, even add topic that are never briefed on other books such as how to do a correct passenger briefing, which checklist to memorize or not etc. I like the graphic and how it explains every hard concepts to grasp. The book is very short, colorful and will capture your attention. It is a great addition to either learn hard concepts or have a quick review. Defientely a great buy!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A wonderful find and must have for anyone preparing for oral/practical ...
*by E***2 on June 5, 2017*

Absolutely spectacular work, worth 10X; no 50X the price! I've been a very slow student pilot and now, well into year three and ~120 hours of training, finally prepping for my checkride. I've spent countless hours reviewing the FAR/AIM, Practical Test standards, watching youtubes of practice oral exams, surfing for handy tips, subscribed to some software based prep. Despite all my preparations, Virgil has put together something (for a paltry ~$4 on Kindle) that surpasses all my study aids. He ferrets out a few gems I thought were truly obscure (wind card, clearing turns to the left) and layers on many more mnemonics than I compiled on my own. As a final bonus, it is totally up to date and discusses the reality of glass panels, mobile apps, and electronic aids in a way few of the older resources do. A wonderful find and must have for anyone preparing for oral/practical ppl.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Exactly what I was looking for
*by K***M on February 6, 2021*

This is a cliff notes type book that helped me read to tune up for my PPL check ride. It's super complete, super efficient to find data or an answer for the DPE and its small and light. More importantly, the charts and lists and FAR references are so efficient that I used it for the oral part of my test and I plan to keep it in my flight bag on trips. I've seen nothing that works better as a quick reference for flying around the country in a GA aircraft than this book. My CFI was so impressed that she is keeping a copy to recommend to future students.
