In the USSR armed forces pilotka was worn by both men and women. Officers and ensigns (warrant officers) wore caps with the edges of the respective branch of the armed forces colors. Officers wore caps with a cockade, and sailors - with an asterisk. It offers the most common type of cap in military uniform used by the red Army during the Second world war and after it until the 1990s. The military cap was worn in the summer season instead of winter hat. It continues to be worn in modern Russia, although more in the air force and Navy, especially among underwater personnel, where its compactness plays a major role.
