Well Done Documentary About Orcas/Killer Whales

*by N***C on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on May 9, 2023*

Blackfish is a well done documentary about orca/killer whales. The show takes you chronologically from the 1960s/1970s when capturing these majestic creatures were popular until a decade ago when Sea World had a trainer killed in 2012. The movie explained how intelligent and emotional killer whales are, starting from how they react to humans chasing them to their behavior in captivity. If you are intelligent, you would know living in captivity for any animal including humans is never fun or healthy to the captives. This is the basic point of this documentary and the great thing is this film has plenty of footage and evidence to prove this point. The most amazing footage was watching a male trainer being grabbed by his leg and dragged down to the bottom of the pool several times by a killer whale. It shows how dangerous it can be to work with killer whales in captivity. The point of this film that captivity is wrong reminds me so much of a Twilight Zone episode when a human was lured into an environment that represented a home only to learn he was placed into a containment in a zoo and not a real home. He was shocked and hated the idea that he was in a space being watched by observers outside the cage even though the place looks like a home. If you would not want to be in this situation, why would you think another intelligent animal would want this?I share the point this movie makes about animals in captivity. However, I have to admit I went to Sea World once in my life and enjoyed the shows and seeing all the sea creatures in the park. It was very educational for me and it does help me to love sea creatures due to my experience of seeing them. Without seeing these beautiful creatures in person, I don't know if I would be as appreciative of their existence. I want these animals to be safe and healthy, but I would not want Sea World to disappear. It would be great if Sea World would watch this film and work out a plan that would not tear apart killer whales' families and offer them much larger environments for these creatures to live in even if they refuse to release them. Of course, releasing them back into the wild would be great, but I am not sure captive animals would know how to survive in the wild when they have been domesticated for so long. I question if these killer whales would know how to hunt when they no longer have a family. Anyway, I think this film was very educational and Sea World should be more honest and do a better job to keep both humans and animals safe. I would not want any more animals such as killer whales to ever be pursued for captivity again. I prefer parks that rescue animals. Watch this film if you know nothing about killer whales.

    Good, and yet sad.

My favorite line was from the newscaster, "If your were in a big bathtub for years, you would be really frustrated too!!! I think about the pandemic, what if you were stuck in your house, no one comes by except the mail person .....you could not leave ever. Your would be sad, P.O'ed, frustrated and angry.Good documentary. Great clips and interviews.I feel sorry for the people that lost their lives,, and I feel sorry for this intelligent whale, who needs to be released far off into the ocean so he can live out the rest of his life in peace.Seaworld, the fact that they do not release him, because he is a sperm donor..... That is disgusting.Don't make a tiger angry, nor a killer whale. This is a great documentary, showing that Seaworld just blamed the people and minimized the problem. All over $$$It was an eye opener.

    I had no idea

I wish I had watched this movie ten years ago. I grew up in south Texas where SeaWorld was one of the biggest attractions in the 90s. Watching this tore me up. I didn’t know about any of this. I can’t support this organization any longer.
