Without headphones it plays well with other instruments (piano, guitar) and sounds pretty similar to regular drums albeit quieter. With headphones it made hardly any sound to onlookers. Everyone in the family (ages 7-50) enjoyed this drum set and played with it all Christmas break before my brother finally took it home with him. It was more compact than I expected it to be, but my brother was happy with it and still felt like it was good for drumming practice.
