The pad has a standard 5 pin MIDI connection so to use it with GarageBand you need either a midi to usb converter or an audio unit with "midi in" connections. Being standard midi, and not USB, you need a device to get the midi data to GarageBand. **Q: Does this power by USB or is the power supply required at all times?** A: Mains power is needed at all times. **Q: does this let you use a click track?** A: Probably but haven't tried it. It has an input jack socket so you could connect to another machine. Personally, I'd save your money on this pad and go for the more expensive eight pad sampler which has more options. I have now bought two - one for my studio and one for the live band. Next best thing to the Roland Octopad but take a look at the pricing for both and you'll see why my vote goes to the Alesis. Pads are sensitive and responsive, its well builts and everyone likes the blue lighting, especially for the live shows! My only suggestion for improvement is that there's no PC/tablet based editing software for it which would make things so much easier. It's not hard to program a custom kit from your wav samples or whatever but it would just be the icing on the cake. The ability to connect a pedal or snare trigger is excellent although I haven't utlised that function yet. I've used the usb midi with my DAW (Ableton) and it works flawlessly.
