Review: Brilliant living room life changer device. Like having new a Game Console, Media player, Desktop Remote. But may need tweaking. - *****EDIT: If you have a Samsung Smart TV 2017 (and probably 2016 model), then you already have Steam Link!! From August 2017, Samsung Smart TV owners can now install a Steam Link app that does everything this box does. So don't buy this as you have it already!! Otherwise all you non Samsung Smart TV owners, do read on!***** Original review: This is a superb low cost device that can potentially make a huge difference to your living room experience as it does for me. I feel I have a brand new top games console in my living room but not only that, it serves as a brilliant media player and desktop remote. You are not only limited to playing your Steam games but also your non steam games too. But to get a fluid laid back sofa experience from this device, you might need to tweak a few things on both your Steam Link box and PC. You would also need decent home network (LAN) connectivity to enjoy this amazing box. You must have EITHER: a wired Ethernet connection between Steam Link and Router or 5Ghz 802.11ac Wifi. If using Wifi, I wont recommend anything less than 5ghz 802.11ac spec but if you do have this, then Steam Link will actually perform a little better than on its Ethernet connection...why? Because Steam Link Ethernet ports are 10/100 bandwidth not a gigabit port. Which is fine, though. Dont listen to the comments that criticise the box for not having a gigabit Ethernet because 1080p 60fps doesnt actually require that bandwidth for fluid 1080p 60fps streaming, 10/100 is enough. However, you do want the connection between your PC and router to be at maximum and you should have this on wired Ethernet. Ideally on a gigabit connection with Cat6 cable to a gigabit Ethernet router. Otherwise, if you have to use Wifi, make sure both your PC and router are 802.11ac 5ghz compatible. If you have a fairly high spec PC and reliable network connectivity, then your box might stream your Steam games in 1080p 60fps without any tweaking needed. Good for you! But for me, I needed to tweak my settings slightly to achieve the 1080p 60fps performance for most of my games. I have a fairly old PC rig with an old AMD Radeon 7970 graphics card. First of all, its important to always update the graphics driver to the latest version. Then I went into my AMD settings and unchecked all hardware decoding except for AMD (if you have Nvidea card, then do the same but leave Nvidea hardware decoding checked). For some people, however, disabling hardware acceleration altogether, improves performance...it can be one or the other for you, so you have to experiment here. The same goes for the VSync setting, for some it improves performance, for others, it worsens. All depends on your PC rig. So trial and error needed with those two settings. If a particular game is very demanding (ex Batman Arkham Knight), you might also have to set streaming settings on Steam Link to Fast mode but dont worry, the quality is still damn good, whatever difference there is must be very minute. Also, if you are still struggling for some reason, 720p is a very acceptable resolution to enjoy your PC games in...after all, most PS3 games were all 720p including the beautiful Uncharted games despite the console being a 1080p, a lot of PS3 owners never realised this. *****Edit: I have since upgraded my Graphics card to a Geforce GTX 970. This made quite an improvement to playing the more demanding games in full 1080p 60fps at higher quality settings. Streaming quality is dependant on your graphics card and your processor too. But they dont have to be high end to enjoy SteamLink.****** Latency. This is the greatest revelation for me. I thought no matter how great the streaming was, its gonna trip up in controller response times. But nope, even with my wireless X box controller, I could not discern any latency in game responses to my controller actions. This truly completes a bona fide game console experience. However, please note I am not a multiplayer gamer. I only play single player games. Multiplayer do demand very low latency but I cannot attest if Steam Link will satisfy a multiplayer gamer, sorry. Oh and make sure your TV is set to GAME MODE. Most TVs in recent years have a game mode setting which turns off all internal processing to minimise latency. Very important, makes a difference. I have enjoyed several of my Steam games from Alien Isolation to Batman Arkham Knight to story driven delights such as Life is Strange on my Steam Link. A mostly smooth enjoyable experience but some games with video logo openings tend to minimise and so the Steam interface appears again. I have to click "Play" again for Steam to switch back to the game again....but this only happens during intro logo videos of the game, not during the game itself. There were some games that minimised causing me to to get up from my sofa, mumbling some mild swear words, and get to my PC to maximise the game, then return back to the sofa. But this turned out to be a third part software called TeamViewer that I had running in the background, causing some games to minimise. On disabling TeamViewer, the games ran perfectly. If you have Teamviewer installed, remember this fix if you come across the same issue. Now to another great unexpected feature. By plugging in a wireless Keyboard and mouse (or combo), you can fully utilise the Steam Link box as a desktop remote facility...and this leads to a further game changing bonus for me in that SteamLink becomes the best living room media player too as I realise I can play movies through VLC player in full screen and in 5.1 surround. Not only that but I can enjoy Video streaming services such as DisneyLife and Netflix in their full browsing capacity. I own a Chromecast and use to cast DisneyLife from my smartphone but content would only play in stereo. Now with SteamLink I can enjoy DisneyLife with 5.1 surround. And of course you can do whatever you normally do sitting at your PC but enjoy doing so in your Living room. I know we have our Netflix and desertcart Prime apps on our Smart TVs but they are cumbersome to navigate. Its so much more easier browsing your movies through your web browser or main PC app. So I now play my Netflix through SteamLink. You can do your work productivity too...but seriously, if you are in the living room sat on your sofa, dont you dare go opening up a spreadsheet...you are suppose to relax and entertain yourself after your hard days work!! Btw the box has 3 USB ports so you can have separate Keyboard, mouse and controller plugged in simultaneously. I have a Logitech k400 full size keyboard/trackpad combo that I previously used on my now redundant HTPC and served me well over the years. There are controller sized keyboard/trackpad combos available for low prices here on desertcart too but I personally prefer fuller size keyboard and recommend something like what I have for ultimate control in desktop remote. You might find better, perhaps one with illuminated keys which mine dont have. Steam Link has changed my living room experience and although I own a PS4 which I thoroughly enjoy, I can now play most of my PC games too in my living room. Also consider PC games are generally much cheaper than the PS4 equivalent, so this box will save me a lot of money down the line as I opt for PC version game releases instead of PS4. I'll reserve my PS4 for its many exclusives and monthly PS Plus games content. One other thing I forgot to mention and a further big bonus is that you are not limited to just playing Steam games. By adding non Steam games to your Steam Library, you can play those too via Steam Link. (games wont perform effectively if you run them through desktop remote mode, it must be through the Steam interface). There is even a way to play Origin client games like Mass Effect and Battlefield but needs some initial setup. There are instructions available by the Steam Link community. I'll give you useful links if you want, just post a reply to this review. So does this also make my PS4 console, redundant? No of course not, the apart from being blu ray players, PS4 and X Box One are dedicated fine tuned gaming experience consoles with excellent exclusives but Steam Link sure as hell adds a great deal to my living room entertainment experience for an extraordinary low price with a near slick interface. And apparantly, with a Steam controller, that experience is enhanced further (albeit with a lot of initial investment patience in setting up). So Steam Link is not absolutely perfect and that's only because of the fickle nature of PCs variable compatibility tweaking. Everyone will have a different first impression depending on your PC rig and network connection. For some, its gonna work like a charm straight out of the box. For others like me, have to be patient and tweak settings with some trial and error. And for those of you, with a weak network connectivity need to upgrade to maximise this box's capability. I would honestly give this device a personal 5 star rating for the extraordinary benefits I have gained from it for just the twenty quid I bought it for on sale. I would have felt justified to pay much more than that, even more than its normal price. Perhaps even at double its normal price, I would have felt money well spent. So for just forty quid, I cant give it a less than 5 star rating despite the initial setup tweaks that maybe needed for some people. 5/5
