As far as I'm aware, it's designed to be used in a filter, so that the water passes through it. I don't think that it would work as efficiently just dropped into the tank.I hope this has helped. **Q: Can this be used in a U3 fluval internal filter or should i buy an external filter?** A: I have the fluval u4 filters and there is no room as these are large bags so I place it at the bottom of my aquarium and it works perfectly well **Q: Does the fluval ammonia remover have zeolite in it** A: No not at all **Q: Why is this not suitible for salt water?** A: Because of how this works, salt causes the product to release the ammonia it absorbed (recharging it). So it won't absorb any in a marine tank. In fresh water it will work and when ammonia levels spike this can be pulled out, soaked in 5% salt solution, washed (in aquarium water) and dried. Then popped back in......if you're having to use this though...... Address the ammonia causing issue front end.....
