Old Skylanders all still work but won't award anything besides an elemental bonus(no parts will unlock by scanning them on the portal)All the parts you unlock are behind purple chests which you find as you play through the levels and worlds- they are everywhere and so anything you decide to do in the game will keep unlocking parts for you to customise with. If you are prepared to spend some extra money through the year to pick up more crystals or Sensei Skylanders eventually- it'll be a rewarding and very well made game for kids and Adults to enjoy for a long time to come. Your children will quickly be convinced into needing newer better ones! Would not have bought this game if I realised this (it was totally predictable in retrospect)!
