I read some negative reviews and decided to test before committing to them. The strongest side is the side with the countersink for a screw head. I put a piece of plastic between the metal and the magnet so as not to scratch the art piece. The magnet held the piece up even with the plastic in between. It was even difficult to slide the magnet to edge to remove it because it is so strong. So, when the magnet is attached to your wall the flat side is against the wall and the strongest side (with the countersink dimple) is out. I'm not certain why folks are struggling to attach these.
