They also sleep, groom and play on them. I was worried they would chew through the platforms, as rats do with so many things, but excluding a single exploratory nibble when first introduced into the cage, the rats see them as part of the cage wall and not as chew toys. Sturdy, well made, and can get cheaper 'refills' without the metal attachment. Great product(s)!
