## Overview

Vetark Aqua-Sed is a UK-manufactured, veterinary-formulated liquid anaesthetic and sedative for fish, featuring a convenient measuring pump for precise dosing. It offers reliable sedation for medical procedures and humane euthanasia at higher doses, backed by long shelf life and licensed quality assurance.

## Description

Product Description Aqua-Sed is based on a well-tried and tested active ingredient, 2-phenoxyethanol, Aqua-Sed makes anaesthesia straightforward - easy dosing with a measuring pump. Aqua-Sed is is also suitable for use as a fish euthanasia product (at 4x the normal dose), which will enable fish keepers to humanely euthanase seriously ill or severely injured fish. Before you anaesthetise a fish check it out first, so that you can plan. Fish should be viewed in the water (from above and from the side if possible), assessing their movements and respiratory rate. In general, fish movements are fluid and seeming relatively effortless. The respiratory movements are generally slow and not obvious. ‘Wooden’ movements, or marked respiratory movements should be viewed with suspicion. The skin in general should be smooth and unbroken, haemorrhages may suggest localised scale damage or more serious septicaemic problems. The scales should normally lay flat against the body. Lifting of scales to produce a ‘pine-cone’ effect may be due to localised or generalised fluid build up in the skin or due to abdominal swelling due to ascites (fluid in the belly of the fish). During the overall assessment of the condition of the fish including observation of its respiratory action, gills may be glimpsed partially. In the majority of cases it will be necessary to lightly anaesthetise fish to examine the gills in detail. The gill can be seen by gently lifting the operculum and perhaps using a suitable light source to illuminate the buccal cavity. The gills should normally be a healthy ‘salmon pink’ colour, with clearly demarcated primary lamellae. Anaesthetising fish is fairly easy BUT still isn’t something to be done lightly. Any anaesthetic a carries a risk, sometimes because the animal has an unknown/undiagnosed problem which causes a problem. For this reason we aren’t keen on the common practice of routine anaesthesia of koi carp ‘just to check them out’. That said, there are lots of good reasons eg. surgery/debridement microchipping handling of - valuable fish, dangerous fish, particularly large fish handling broodstock for stripping, blood sampling, treatment etc vaccination by injection For more information on the product or on fish anaesthesia or euthanasia please visit the Vetark website www.vetark.co.uk Directions 1. Use the measuring pump provided to accurately measure the required dosage. 2. Administer the solution to the target fish for anaesthesia or euthanasia purposes. 3. Use the product for ornamental and pond fish that require treatment. Review: A Superb, Effective and Predictable Solution to Fish Anaesthesia & Euthanasia - Having used clove oil for fish sedation & euthanasia in the past I ordered this product on the strength of other desertcart reviews as I needed to remove a small mouth lesion on an angelfish and wanted to be absolutely sure that I had my dosage correct. The product is very easy to use (1 pump per litre for sedation) and once introduced the fish was suitably anaesthetised within a minute or two. The fish appeared to accept the anaesthetic bath calmly without panicking and thrashing about at all. I successfully removed the lesion inside two minutes. It was good to know that, if I had no choice & the life saving procedure proved impossible, I could have simply added more Aqua Sed to the anaesthetic bath before returning the fish to it to be quietly and humanely euthanized without it ever fully waking up from the initial anaesthetic. Fortunately that wasn't necessary. Once returned to a hospital tank of fresh water the fish regained full consciousness and was swimming freely again within two or three minutes. I do not routinely leave as many desertcart reviews as I should but was so impressed with Aqua Sed and how it helped me (hopefully) save my fish I felt I must leave a review. It will certainly keep a supply of Aqua Sed to hand in future now for stress free fish anaesthetic and euthanasia.
Review: Use carefully - Used too sedate a large koi for inspection, used sparingly and very effective. Wore of well when koi replaced in pond and stabilized

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Will this work on my crayfish ?**
A: Unfortunately, there is no current data on the use of Aqua-Sed in Crayfish.

**Q: Is this a suitable purchase for saltwater fish / marine fish or is it purely for freshwater?**
A: The Vetark Aqua-Sed can used for anaesthesia or euthanasia in all fish.

**Q: What is the shelf life of this product?**
A: I'm afraid I don't know. Just had a look at the bottle and it says store in a cool, dry place and use by expiry date on the base, which I couldn't see at all. I've certainly had mine for over 6 months and it still works fine. The only proviso with it is that if used as a euthanasia, increase the dose very slowly from sedative to overdose otherwise the fish don't react well and you don't get the peaceful end you were looking for.

**Q: Would this work on African dwarf frogs? I had to euthanise one recently using benzocaine and freezing her but it still felt bad.**
A: Ive checked their website and found this information.

Q. Can I use Aqua-Sed to sedate amphibians?
A. Yes, you can use Aqua-Sed to sedate amphibians at the same dosage as stated for fish, however great care should be taken and under veterinary supervision as the process will take effect much quicker due to the product being absorbed through the skin.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Fantastic
*by M***N on 31 August 2024*

Having been rescuing fish for several years, most of which being goldfish that have been bred to be "pretty" but not functional leading to health issues and me having to make THAT call.. I've used several methods in previous years to do that, but this was by far the easiest, calmest and most humane. Only needed a tiny amount to get it done so I have plenty left. I'm sure it will go out of date before I manage to finish it (at least I hope I don't have to use much more any time soon!) Will also be fantastic for sedating fish who have severe wounds to clean and seal them. Will use this religiously from now on, fantastic product.
