Her grandfather, initially a grumpy loner, warms to be a caring soul who shows Heidi the joy of living in tune with nature. He gives Heidi space to become self-reliant and capable. Watching her blossom as a person warms the heart, and this is what has made Heidi a classic story. The only thing missing was the naturopathic teaching that the goats eat the herbs that make their milk medicine for Heidi when she's ailing. Otherwise, the health benefits of living in the mountain air, getting lots of exercise and eating what the environment provides come through in a way that makes you feel healthier just for having watched the movie.
