I started to watch Contact with no enthuasiasm whatsoever - it's a Sci - Fi film, need I continue? But then I came to see that it was so much more than that. I think everyone at at least one point in life mustv'e questioned it's meaning; what are we all doing here? Does God really exist? And this film deals with all those issues without making it to religious or "mushy". It just really gets you thinking. It's an amazing film with a really strong cast, and Robert Zemickis, who hasn't heard of him?! There isn't anything I don't like about it and everytime I see it, it hits my really hard and saddens me. We really are all so alone. It is exetremely thought provoking and it has since inspired me to become an astronomer myself! Please don't listen to reviews who completely rip it apart - fair enough everyone has different tastes, but if you just gave it a go, with an open mind and an open heart, I think you would really love it. I can't even begin describe what a great script it has and the way the story evolves. It is one of my favourite films and it has taught me to never judge a film by it's cover. Being a philosopher myself, It copes with the religious issues exetremely well without being boring or over the top to people who aren't religious, It just gets them thinking. It's time to make Contact! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Copy? *by L***Y on 28 February 2005* One of the most amazing films I've ever seen, and it doesn't mention the war...(well, almost...!!!) I remember seeing this at the cinema with my first boyfriend, who was (to say the least) disappointed and insisted we go and see Aliens Resurrected next! I don't think I ended up crying then, but certainly re-watching it now on DVD I had forgotten how Jodie Foster's powerful acting makes the whole thing come alive, and how after this I had no doubt that she would be the leading lady in any of my own films! The intensity of this movie is what makes it worth watching; although the love-interest thing is a bit shlocky and the debate is meaningless to this "anything goes" European, this does not stand in the way of what for a long time was my favourite film ever, and still remains my favourite *Hollywood* film ever. The characters, particularly the government advisers (which includes David Drumlin), are intensely realistic and show the depths to which American chauvinism, even in the Clinton era, can sink, without pulling any punches for a largely American target market. The religion-v-science debate is presented in the manner of Kieslowski, without prejudice as to who is right (I am myself a Christian but was still rooting for Dr Arroway!). Zemeckis' camera-work is very good, and adds to the other-worldly feel of some of the locations; however without these - and the stunning CGI graphics - the film would still have made me cry buckets. I have not yet listened to the commentaries but I will do so as soon as I have a spare week or two!
