When I opened the packaging I found the sharpening surface to be pitted and dented, as were the edges and the reverse side. I can only speculate, but this looked like a damaged, possibly used, item which was sold as new.I was unable to make contact with DMT in the US through their website. I sent messages via their Facebook page which have not been answered.I made contact with Starkie Sharp the UK retailer who confirmed that the stone should have a smooth, uniform surface, not the one I had been supplied. I have purchased a new stone from Starkie, and will look there first in future (phone him up, have a chat or see him at a country show).I returned the item to Amazon who agreed to a refund without argument. The returns process is very easy.
