You have to plug the unit in to make it work. The light bulb powers the solor panel. The included bulb is very harsh if you look from an angle. I would have preferred the ability to just plug it in and turn the wheel on, without the light. But this is still a cool toy. Even moved the wheel right next to a window . . . still nothing. The bulb has no shield to direct light so if you have this setting on a desk or using in a office environment you may not be totally pleased.
