There are a number of songs that I was either expecting for the first time or had forgotten about, because they're no longer heard on the radio. What a shame! However, a few weeks ago I was listening to a Roger Daltrey narrated documentary on Wilson Pickett, and had this epiphany: putting aside the image, Tom Jones is the closest the UK has come to a Wilson Pickett/Solomon Burke. It's the voice, you see, capable of handling blues, rock, funk, and country, which is also like Messrs Burke and Pickett in that respect. I had previously purchased Praise & Blame, an amazing change in direction by Tom Jones, and an amazing album by any artist: it is a rare current album that you can listen to straight through. This compilation has tracks from all time periods of Tom Jones, from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and bang up to date.
