Review: A Beautiful Throwback with customer Service second to none! - First of all, hats off to the designer—this keyboard is a work of art. I have the version with the wooden base, and it truly feels like something pulled straight out of the 1960s. I haven’t touched a manual typewriter since I was a child, but using this brings it all back. At first, I almost returned it. I couldn’t type three words without a typo! But it was too beautiful to give up on so quickly, so I committed to giving it a solid day. I’m glad I did—now I’m clicking away just fine, and it’s here to stay. That said, I’d recommend a wrist rest. I’m used to my hands lounging comfortably on my Logitech with full wrist support. This keyboard has none, and it sits quite high compared with modern designs. That’s not really a flaw—it’s intentional and part of its old-school charm—but it’s worth knowing. There is one drawback if you hope to use this with a large iPad: the tablet slot is too shallow, and the back support is too short for my 13-inch iPad. Initially, mine either fell backward or threatened to tip the whole keyboard over. I eventually discovered a simple solution: leave the iPad in a case. The additional thickness and friction hold mine securely in the slot. I still wouldn’t trust the setup while bouncing around on a train, but on a stable desk it works quite well. Bluetooth pairing with my Mac was seamless. The backlighting is a fun touch, and the clicky keys are deeply satisfying. I also want to give this company some well-deserved recognition for standing behind its products. More than a year after purchasing this keyboard, I had what I would consider a relatively minor problem and contacted the company to ask whether they might be able to help. There was initially a delay in communication, which was disappointing and which I mentioned in an earlier update to this review. Well, I’m very happy to update the story again. Once the company understood the situation, they went far beyond anything I had requested or reasonably expected. I was genuinely astonished by the lengths they went to in order to make sure I was completely satisfied. Keep in mind that this was more than a year after my original purchase and involved a relatively minor issue—not some catastrophic failure of the keyboard. I’m deliberately not going into the specifics of what they did because I don’t want anyone reading this to assume that my experience represents a standard policy or something every customer should expect; I specifically don’t want anyone to take advantage of their kindness as I did not expect them to go this far to correct a missing keycap. I’ll simply say that their response was extraordinarily generous and completely restored the confidence I had expressed in their customer service before this issue occurred. Over a year after purchase most companies would simply do nothing at all, especially since the problem was due to me losing a key cap. There’s nothing wrong with the machine. Companies are easy to praise when everything goes perfectly. What tells you much more is what happens when there’s a problem. In this case, they ultimately went above and beyond to take care of a longtime customer. So, more than a year later: I still love the keyboard, it remains one of the favorites in my collection, and I can once again say without hesitation that my experience with this company’s customer service has been outstanding. Review: I Wanted to Love It... - UPDATED! - Although I prefer keyboards with an extended numerical keyboard, I saw this and fell in love. I love another brand as well, but those keyboards are north of about $200. No bueno. When this arrived, I was not disappointed with the look. OF COURSE there's not real wood, but it has the look of wood. Because I'm a touch typist, I appreciate the raised knobs on the f and j keys, which keep me focused. The carriage knob for the sound is perfect, and that surprised me. No more searching the keyboard for the right volume key. So why don't I LOVE it the way I wanted? It's the backlight. Or, more accurately, the way the backlight refuses to cooperate. Sometimes I can get it to turn on, but more often than not, it'll just randomly turn off and not do anything. Or, it'll turn on. I know my house isn't haunted, so this is a little weird. Sometimes when it comes on, it's the racing lights which can be very distracting in a dark room. Ultimately, when I tried to adjust the lights with the "carriage return" during one of the keyboard's tantrums, it fell off in my hand. Ugh. I will return it and hope I can get an exchange. I obviously don't hate it, but sometimes, I just like for something to work. FWIW, I have a PC-oriented gaming keyboard with lots of lights that I use on my Mac Mini, and it works perfectly, whether I want crazy lights or just something soft in the background while I'm concentrating on the task. I wanted this keyboard because it's Mac-centric and I don't have to guess at the various control keys. I'll update with any hiccups or resolution. UPDATE! I updated to five stars because the replacement keyboard does everything promised. As I noted earlier, I love the clicky-click keys and for some reason, they allow me to type faster. I'm typing this using the keyboard onto my MacBook Air laptop. (I a laptop ever made a keyboard like this, I'd snatch one up immediately!) With this keyboard having the Mac keys clearly marked, it is so much easier to type without having to guess through the corresponding Windows keys. Mac users, take notice! Of course, the most important part in this situation is that the lights work! While I'm not sure of the rationale behind providing some of the odd patterns, the main thing is that I can now easily type in a room with dimmed lighting. The return/replace process was dead easy, and now I have the fully functional keyboard. Love it!
