It is crimped tightly enough that I wasn't sure if the ring was molded or folded until I looked at it under a magnifying glass. It is crimped tightly enough that there is no seam into which gunk could accumulate, although it is possible that the seam was filled with solder or something similar. My only complaint about this plate is that the STAINLESS STEEL stamp on the underside of the plate can be seen as a reverse image on the plate's upper surface.
