## Description

Seachem Matrix, 4 L / 1 gal.

Review: Matrix is very effective at housing all of that good bacteria a filter needs to work. - I’ve been using Matrix for around ten years. It works extremely well, and holds up over time. I do keep it in mesh bags inside of my filters. I can’t imagine cleaning a filter without using the mesh bag, for easy removal and rinsing. I’ve been working on a new garden pond and decided to give matrix a go in place of the commonly used lava rock. Clearly a large amount is needed so I started price hunting these 1 gallon matrix tubs. This was the best priced I found. I like to buy from my LFS but the price was nearly double. Everything arrived in perfect condition, and as expected.
Review: Gets rid of nitrates! - This review is meant for both Seachem's Stability and Seachem's Matrix. I helped my son set up his 120 gallon African cichlid tank. We went through about 5 or 6 different filters and settled on an Eheim. From what we had learned from our research on tank setups we had understood that the filter media, once properly colonized, will remove ammonia and nitrites from the water but will not remove nitrates (ammonia gets converted by one kind of bacteria in the filter to nitrites and in turn another kid of bacteria will convert the nitrites into nitrates). The only way to reduce the nitrate levels is by either having live plants or even better, periodic water changes. We were also told that if we have a deep enough substrate then after about 6 months or so, if we get lucky, deep in the substrate will develop a bacterial colony that will help reduce the nitrates. As I continued my research I stumbled on to the Seachem web site. I was impressed by the specs of their Matrix product. It claimed to be able to support bacteria that will eliminate nitrates from the water. Great! Now all I have to do is buy this filter media, wait six months and I'm all set. Not only that, but from what I've read on the Internet, it could take up to two whole months for the ammonia and nitrites eating bacteria to properly develop. Well, luck for me, I found the Stability product. I added both the Matrix filter media and Stability to my setup (Stability needs to be added to the water on a daily basis for one week) and tested the water after one week. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the ammonia and nitrites levels had dropped down to 0! My son was telling me not to bother testing for nitrates because it's guaranteed that they'll be there. I tested anyway and guess what? Zero! This works like magic!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The BEST media available
*by T***T on March 26, 2023*

Matrix is a high-porosity biological filter media designed for aquarium filtration. Matrix has a vast internal pore network that provides surface area for the attachment of beneficial bacteria. Porosity and high surface area alone should be the measure of biomedia. Matrix has a primarily macroporous internal pore structure. This means the pores are large enough for the bacteria to enter and form stable colonies. Large surface area measurements sound impressive but if the pores are too small the bacteria cannot get in and colonize the media. This means the bacteria can only grow on the unprotected surface of the biomedia. The colonies are vulnerable to washout caused by high velocity “microshear,” which is the scrubbing effect of water flowing over smooth surfaces. Seachem Matrix protects nitrifying bacteria inside the porous network so the colonies remain undisturbed. But there’s more. Under the right conditions natural denitrification can occur, lowering nitrate levels without the need for a special de-nitrification filter. Matrix provides the right microenvironment that allows nitrification and natural denitrification to take place in the same filter. Seachem Matrix will remove ammonia, nitrite and nitrate! Matrix can be used in any power filter, canister filter, contactor or filter sump. Matrix never needs replacing and can be rinsed if it becomes dirty.
