No, they are not rude life forms from another galaxy but rather a kind of spasm, or mini seizure, that you get as you try to drift off to sleep. In my case they are exceptionally nasty; about two weeks ago I clamped down on my tongue so hard I drew a little blood. One of these about 2 hours before bed puts me more in a mind to sleep than nothing at all, and has very significantly reduced the severity of these incidents.
