I also bought him a scroll saw. He at first just looked at the pictures and thought it was a cool book. I read most of the helpful information at the beginning of the book before wrapping it. It helped me with selecting the scroll saw and everything my husband would need to get started. There is A LOT of great information in the first few pages. My husband tried to play with his new scroll saw after looking at the pictures of this book. He became quickly frustrated. I pointed out things I read and explained how the pattern lessons worked. We made copies of the lesson patterns and glued them on scrap wood. He was off zipping through the different cuts. After reading the words of the book he understood more about the scroll saw. The picture is not a project from the book, but he did learn how to make the cuts from book. Not bad for a first-time project and a husband that is inpatient. I highly recommend the book. It has great information that is easy to follow, and the lessons are explained well. It does require reading. You won't just learn how to use a scroll saw by just looking at the pictures in the book. Review: Gift for my wife just starting scrolling - Good general overview at the beg, lots of skill practice exercises. Material and blades are listed for each exercise which all contain multiple techniques multiple times. Good skill builder. She was able to accomplish all of it on an inexpensive Harbor Freight scroll saw with minor modification to the saw (changed the heads to pinless).
