## Description

Review: Nice intermediate difficulty model ship. - The precarved hull and many metal fittings speed up the build and reduce the difficulty. A Dremel tool and lots of clamps (see photo), are highly recommended. Following the instruction booklet with care and understanding the scale drawings are essential. Patience and time (a few hours for a couple of months to do a good job) are also essential. While I'm early in to this build, all is not perfect with this kit. While a section at the foremast is drwn to scale, not so for the main mast: dimensions have to be taken from the rigging drawing which is difficult at best. As a builder of a 64gun Napoleonic era ship from Caldercraft, (see photo) I strongly recommend building one of their smaller "easier" ships (not the one in the photo): highest quality materials and elaborate instructions for every step. While elaborate, it's a much better experience in my opinion. With Caldercraft, when finished, you will have a work of art.
Review: Soon will be ready to run the British blockade - Carving the hull is challenging, but I forgot to measure and carve the deck before adding the planking, just smoothed it. This error was discovered far too late when I found the guns had difficulty fitting the gun ports. Shaving the gun carriage took care of this. If you do not have helping hands (the Kracken) or a speed hand drill (as shown in the pictures), and a good pair of curved tweezers, you will have a lot of problems. This is a great project model, and I highly recommend it.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Let me ask it this way, is this the same design as would have been the pride of baltimore 1 ?**
A: Basically, both models are Baltimore Clippers, a popular privateer ship design of the early 1800's . The Dapper Tom was actually the creation of John Shedd, founder of Model Shipways who designed the model in the early 1950's following the lines and rig set forth by Chapelle, who was curator at the Smithsonian for all nautical vessels. Shedd named his kit design after his college roommate who's nick name was Dapper Tom. The kit was Model Shipways most popular for over 30 years. It is made of solid basswood construction and therefore relatively easy to build. As for Pride of Baltimore 1, I'm sure you know that it was built in 1977 by the city of Baltimore but sunk in a squall in 1986 returning from a European tour. Pride of Baltimore II was funded by the city to replace Pride I with the same design. I had the good fortune in 1990 to have received a request from the City of Baltimore to create a replica of Pride II. I spent a couple of days on board Pride II with Ben Lankford, our designer, photographing everything visible so as to create a perfectly accurate kit and replica. Our kit is so detailed that we even incorporated the deck prisms (used to let light down below deck) in the model kit. I write too much. Thanks for asking.

**Q: Does this come with the base/stand shown?**
A: No, it does not. Base and pedestals are available at extra cost from our company website. Model builders often have different ideas as to how to display their models. Some create cradles, others launching ways or create their own display bases.

**Q: What paint and glue would I need to build a Wooden ship model?**
A: You can use cynoacrylate glue ... look for Model Expo Glue on Amazon. You can use any brand of acrylic (water based) model paint ... Tamiya, Vallejo, Testors, etc.

**Q: I am brand new to this hobby. Is this model a good project for a person that is new?**
A: Depends on your previous experience working with wood. The solid hull is 90% complete but does require some additional shaping at bow and stern with medium sized wood files. The bulwarks (rails) also need careful thinning. All is explained in the lengthy instruction manual. When finished it is superb model. If what I wrote intimidates you I strongly suggest that you spend less money and look for our Model Shipways Dory with tools, glue and paint. It costs $49.99. Item MS1470CB. It is a Skill Level 1 kit, authentic in every detail, but a great introduction to the hobby. You should be able to complete the model within a few days of work and then be ready to move forward. We have other model kits at Skill Level 2 and 3. Again ... search for: Lowell Grand Banks Dory Wooden Model Ship Kit with Tools 1:24 Scale. Welcome to our hobby ... chances are you'll never look back.
