It's a reinforced flap on the backside that is perfectly sized to fit in the back pocket of jeans. When inserted into your pocket, the pouch supposedly does not need to be attached to your belt. The flap feels sturdy, and it is constructed in a way that makes it close onto the pocket and not just hang loosely. For quick jobs, this seems like an interesting feature, but I have yet to try it with a hammer. I would imagine if your pants are a little loose fitting, it might not function as well.I like that the belt loop snaps on and off, as I don't need a hammer loop on my tool belt constantly. The open pocket is large enough for a good amount of nails. The only weird thing is that the poly is layered around some oddly crinkly plastic that makes a lot of noise. I'm sure it's there to add durability, but it feels weird to scrunch it up. Would be pleased by this. It holds quite a few of the most used tools, electrical tape chain, and many small pockets for accessories. It has an over-the-belt snap on it so you can put on and take off the tool kit without taking off your belt. While convenient, it sometimes unsnaps if you seriously overweight the pocket. And I mean seriously overweight, it's fairly stout and won't just unsnap on it's own during normal use. it also as a pocket flap for putting the pouch in you butt pocket.I've used this pouch for over 3 years and I finally broke the snap loose from the fabric by putting too many tools in the pouch.
