Not sure I have actually smelled it closely, but the strings don't have any particular and significant smell. **Q: Is the black as slick as the natural?** A: Yes. I think it slips a bit more. It does wear off faster than the natural and when you hit the tennis ball you will notice black marks that match strings. The black is my preferred string. **Q: is it polyester** A: This is multi filament **Q: Recommended tension for a 100 inch 10.8 pounds racquet?, 56lbs?, higher? lower?** A: 56 lbs good place to start.
