    Love in Venice

*by D***L on Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2021*

In "Summertime", Katharine Hepburn's Jane Hudson is not, to use dated and sexist terminology, a spinster or an unmarried woman, but rather an independent woman, not defined by her relationship to a man . .Ultimately, to give away a plot point, it is she who chooses to leave but not before she becomes a character from Henry James, finding her values and morality challenged by a culture clash with the far more permissive Italians."Summertime" belongs to the international phase of Katharine Hepburn's career, which began with "The African Queen" (1951), and its on location shooting. Later in her career, she would shoot "The Lion in Winter" (1968) in Ireland and France and "The Trojan Women" (1971) ,set in ancient Greece, but shot in Spain. This is a romantic film, in all the definitions of the term. Its leading man is not a heart throb, like, say, Marcello Mastroianni, but a very convincing shopkeeper. We're never quite sure if he is running a con on her with his assertions that the red goblet she purchases is "18th century". Of course it has to be red, the color of passion, as do the evening shoes she buys to go with her elegant new black evening dress.Hepburn's director, David Lean, has a sure and measured approach to the subject matter and the actress, guiding her to an exquisitely subtle and deeply felt performance. As she absorbs the almost overwhelming beauty of St. Mark's Square, Hepburn finds herself and her freckled leg the object of the Brazzi character's fascination. She is filming an image of the square. He is one of its realities,This film was based on a Broadway play starring Shirley Booth and must have presented quite a challenge to the production designer .Venice is, after all, one of the two main characters in "Summertime" and Jack Hildyard's vivid cinematography reveals her in all her multi-faceted glory. Venice would later be associated with decay and death in "Death in Venice"(1971) and "Don't Look Now" (1973). Here she is a moral education and an instructress in sensory beauty. The other main character, of course, is played by Katharine Hepburn, who does her own stunt work, including falling into a polluted canal which would infect her eyes going forward and be partially responsible for the lacrimation which became one of her leading characteristics. Here everything is under control and quite calibrated. We truly see her character opening up, learning to appreciate love in the guise in which it presents itself, a middle-aged, unhappily married husband and father."Summertime" was filmed 10 years after the end of World War II, when Americans were first beginning to re-discover the splendors of Mama Europa .As such, it is a time capsule, especially now that the large cruise ships have been banned from the ecologically fragile Venetian canals. Jane, however arrives and departs by train, the better to see the city a la distance as a mysterious entity to be explored and appreciated. Jane would never be one of a crowd. The script includes a number of characters who are vivid contrasts to Jane, and also what she might become. Chief among these are the MCIlhennys who are stereotypically obtuse and blundering "Ugly American" tourists and are staying at the same pensione as is Jane. They embody the first post-war wave of tourists but even they learn from their experience, if minimally. Jane, however, is utterly transformed. The Venice depicted herein no longer exists, but it has never been more beautifully rendered than in this film and in this superlative Japanese imported Blu-ray. This is the film in and of itself: no production notes, no critical evaluation, no English subtitles."Summertime", the Blu-ray, bedazzles under its own power.
