One is the ball pressure. The other is the extension..how far it sticks out. Now in my case I didn't want to miter either of the components. I just went for 3 holes for each item. I had room so this was the fastest and easiest. The only concern I had is that the threads were kind of tight. I got it to work but not smooth.
