## Description

The Shimano Di2 EW-WU111 Inline Wireless Unit boosts the system's ease of use by adding Bluetooth connectivity in addition to carrying over ANT+ to pair with an even wider range of devices. Paired with Shimano's E-Tube Project Wireless app, the Inline Wireless Unit lets you customize your drivetrain and update firmware right from your smartphone or other Bluetooth equipped device. This diminutive component is like a black box for your bike, feeding data from your derailleurs to your phone or tablet so you can monitor drivetrain metrics like gearing and battery life. The latter is especially useful, as it's looking to be the most effective way the industry has come up with to ensure you won't unexpectedly run out of juice during the trip home. It also measures general riding metrics, so you're not sacrificing the functionality of a normal computer by adding drivetrain info to your cockpit. Your pedal revolutions will also be televised. The Di2 EW-WUlll Inline Wireless Unit is compatible with Shimano's E-tube Di2 systems. In addition to it Bluetooth connectivity, it transmits via ANT+ to Shimano's own PRO computer, as well as other ANT+ equipped head units.

    Setup Difficulties

*by P***A on Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2018*

I am giving this just 2 stars based on the initial setup. Here is how it went.My DI2 had a removable connector near the handlebars which I simply removed and replaced with this unit. No problem there! Next I followed the instructions and put the DI2 in pairing mode by holding in the reset button. Lights flash red / green....great! Next, launch app on my iPhone follow prompts, set a new PIN and app pairs with the unit......woohoo!!! Then app tells me the firmware needs to be updated. The firmware update starts and things are progressing nicely until the app crashes...Uh oh... Try to reconnect app, Nothing. Try to put Di2 back into pairing mode....nothing. Lights dead, shifting doesn't work, NOTHING WORKS!!!!Now begins a long, long process to try and fix it. I will skip all the crap I went through but it took several hours before I finally got it to work again. Here is the process1. Update firmware through the app on your phone or other device.2. Somewhere along the way the firmware update kills the bluetooth and you will lose connection and the update fails3. Remove the WU111 and your DI2 should start to work again. Once functionality is restored put the broken WU111 back in place.3. Here is the key step, "YOU MUST NOW USE A DIFFERENT DEVICE TO CONNECT TO AND UPDATE THE UNIT". A PC can't be use for this purpose because the WU111 must be updated via BlueTooth ( makes total sense if you think about it. Like really it does, No seriously really it does.......). No matter what you do the original device will see but not properly pair with the unit. You must switch to a completely different phone or tablet and repeat the entire setup there.4. Once the second device is connected it will warn you the the current firmware may not function properly and should be updated.5. The second firmware update attempt seems to complete without problem and from there everything is golden.I think the problem has something to do with either the app or the device looking for the default PIN of 000000 while the other is looking for the custom PIN you put in during setup. Removing and reinstalling the app on my phone did not fix the problem. Using my wife's phone and starting from scratch allowed me to re-enter the custom PIN at which point it all went well. After the update was complete I was able to go back to the original phone and connect from there as well. There is another recent reviewer that had the same problem with a similar solution. This may be a temporary problem with this particular firmware patch. But having spent a lot of time working with technology nothing makes you more queasy than a firmware update that fails half-way through. There is no guarantee of recovery in most cases.Functionally the device seems to be working OK now. I programmed the buttons on my shifters to control my Garmin which is cool and I am able to see my DI2 battery level reported along with my other data which is why I wanted the unit to begin with.Hopefully if you buy one of these and run into the same problem the above steps will save you a bunch of grief.

Interesting idea flawed by bad software that might brick your shirters.

*by M***N on Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2018*

This must be one of the worst purchases I’ve done.Shimano makes nice hardware but they suck at software; both on iOS and Windows. It’s obviously gone through no UX design and seems to have been cobbled together by someone who has never tried to make user friendly software. The E-TUBE app tries to automatically update the firmware of your Di2 components on 1st connect. Unfortunately this seems fail and brick your system for many people, including me. The only recovery method is to use their Windows only software and USB-A connection (no Mac software, and it doesn’t work virtualised either). And if you can use that you don’t need the wireless unit, because your charger already works as the connector to your computer. It managed to recover and update my Di2, but then refused to assign functions to the A-buttons and didn’t present a way to adjust the shifting speed faster, only slower (maybe it does but the SW is terrible and the terms are weird). So wireless box to the rescue. Slightly better UX and I managed to find how to adjust shifting speed and assign rear mech up-down to my A-buttons. Unfortunately it borked my Di2 again but this time even their Windows SW can’t recover it without the more advanced cable (not just the charger).

Needs more documentation but it works

*by J***Y on Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2019*

Read several reviews about how hard this is to setup. I think there are a few major details that need to be understood to make your experience much better. When you first connect to the unit it will have a default bluetooth passcode (six zeros). It asks you to update the passcode right away. Keep in mind that your phone remembers this connection and, thus, thinks the passcode is still six zeros. After getting through whatever initial setup processes you should disconnect the bluetooth from the main menu of the E-Tube app and then go into your phone and forget the bluetooth connection. Then repeat the same steps you did to initially connect but use your new passcode.Lastly, and this is important, you always need to disconnect the bluetooth in the E-tube app after you are done. Nothing will work when this unit is paired with your phone.Hope this helps
