Luke has never been to school. He's never had a birthday party, or gone to a friend's house for an overnight. In fact, Luke has never had a friend. Luke is one of the shadow children, a third child forbidden by the Population Police. He's lived his entire life in hiding, and now, with a new housing development replacing the woods next to his family's farm, he is no longer even allowed to go outside. Then, one day Luke sees a girl's face in the window of a house where he knows two other children already live. Finally, he's met a shadow child like himself. Jen is willing to risk everything to come out of the shadows—does Luke dare to become involved in her dangerous plan? Can he afford not to? ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | Book 1 Of 7 | Shadow Children | | Dimensions | 13 x 1.02 x 19.35 cm | | Edition | Reprint ed. | | Grade Level | 3 - 7 | | Isbn 10 | 0689824750 | | Isbn 13 | 978-0689824753 | | Item Weight | 1.05 kg | | Language | English | | Print Length | 153 pages | | Publication Date | 1 April 2000 | | Publisher | Simon & Schuster Australia | | Reading Age | 8 - 12 years | ## Images ![Among the Hidden: 1 (Shadow Children) - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/719aVryX-1L.jpg) ## Available Options This product comes in different **Format** options. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ One of the best books for upper primary kids ever! *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 17 June 2008* I first discovered this book when teaching Y7s in New Zealand and brought a copy back to the UK with me, read it to my old Y6 class who loved it and then to my current Y5s who got so into it many got it and the following books shipped in.Among the hidden is set in a political time when resources are supposedly so low that families are only allowed two children. Inevitably a race of hidden children develops. The story is based around a third child who knows he is different but it only the building of new houses at the back of his house that forces his family to hide him. hidden in his attic room he watches the comings and goings of the new families until one day he spots something at one of the houses.A must buy for any confident upper primary reader, Haddix books are great, check out running out of time. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good Buy *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 22 July 2019* Bought this for my son for his summer reading, and he really enjoyed it. Scary at times, but written well. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Among The Impressed! *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 12 January 2014* Let me just say that YA is not my thing, and I loved this book! For a quick read this book was very thought provoking. My heart ached this family, but especially for Luke. Luke is a third child in a world where having three children is illegal, punishable by death and fines for the parents. As I read this well written story, I couldn't help thinking about our world today, and everything that is going on all over. Financial chaos, food shortages, natural disasters, gas prices, and rioting all making Haddix world something to think about. Among the Hidden left me wanting to find out more about Luke's new adventures and the dangers that he will be facing. His world turned upside down once again and loosing everything that was familiar to him. I can't wait to read book 2, Among the Imposters! --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.at/products/66846738-among-the-hidden-1-shadow-children](https://www.desertcart.at/products/66846738-among-the-hidden-1-shadow-children) --- *Product available on Desertcart Austria* *Store origin: AT* *Last updated: 2026-10-28*
