Each layer is approximately 4 inches deep. Maybe slightly less. Each side has 5 vertical slots in which to slide the included cardboard dividers. That yields much smaller comparments than most or all of my ornaments. In fact, for my Radko ornaments I have to arrange them so that only 3-4 fit in a given layer. I hope this helps. I just bought my 4th cube and will probably be back for more. **Q: Is this plastic phthalte free?** A: yes **Q: I bought this only to fnd that my cardboard dividers are too short! Has anyone figured out a way to make new dividers that will fit the slots?** A: The dividers are not meant to slide into the slots, though it appears that they should. Once you put them together as instructed and place ornaments in them, they fit in the box quite nicely. **Q: Do you think this would work for tea cup storage?** A: It probably could be used for tea cup storage. The partitions would most likely need to be taken out, or configured to be larger. If they didn't fit in the partitions, then your tea cups should be wrapped in bubble wrap.
