SCSI and IDE are completely different architectures, and this adapter is for connecting a small (2.5" = laptop/notebook) IDE HD to a large (3.5" = desktop) IDE cable. You want to search for "SCSI to SATA Adapter" if you want to connect this drive to a SATA connection. **Q: my dell HD has a straight line of pins not separated like in the photo, do you use only one side of the female part opn the adapter** A: Any 2.5 inch PATA/IDE hard drive will have a missing pin near the center. There will be a group of 40 pins with one missing. Thus, making it only 39 pins. You must connect all 39 pins. (There will also be a group of 4 pins that are not always used.) The missing pin prevents the cable from being connected wrong. We probably will buy another one ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ worked great for my purposes *by W***Y on February 12, 2012* My sister's laptop died and she asked me to help her rescue some files for her. I connected it to my desktop using the IDE1 cable and jumpering her drive as slave. One slight hitch was that the PIN 1 indicator on her drive was wack and so I didn't get any happiness until I reversed the ribbon cable from what the manufacturer of the hard drive stated. This is clearly not the fault of this little adapter, it did its job great! Having read other reviews on this item, I was careful with connecting the power adapter to the plugs on my computer. It is not too hard if you've done that kind of thing before. They're always a little wiggly and so you have to kind of work them in...
