The novel’s vision of Soviet life in the 1930s is so ferociously accurate that it could not be published during its author’s lifetime and appeared only in a censored edition in the 1960s. Its truths are so enduring that its language has become part of the common Russian speech. Now The Overlook Press is reissuing this acclaimed translation in an all-new package. One hot spring, the devil arrives in Moscow, accompanied by a retinue that includes a beautiful naked witch and an immense talking black cat with a fondness for chess and vodka. The visitors quickly wreak havoc in a city that refuses to believe in either God or Satan. But they also bring peace to two unhappy Muscovites: one is the Master, a writer pilloried for daring to write a novel about Christ and Pontius Pilate; the other is Margarita, who loves the Master so deeply that she is willing to literally go to hell for him. What ensues is a novel of inexhaustible energy, humor, and philosophical depth, a work whose nuances splendidly emerge in Diana Burgin’s and Katherine Tiernan O’Connor's superb English translation, with an afterword and extensive commentary by Ellendea Proffer. ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | Dimensions | 20.8 x 14 x 1.72 cm | | Edition | 1st | | Isbn 10 | 1419756508 | | Isbn 13 | 978-1419756504 | | Item Weight | 1.05 Kilograms | | Language | English | | Print Length | 432 pages | | Publication Date | 25 November 2021 | | Publisher | The Overlook Press | ## Images ![The Master and Margarita - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81-91lo3rzL.jpg) ## Available Options This product comes in different **Format** options. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excelente *by on Reviewed in Brazil 26 March 2016* Um livro envolvente, de uma trama dinâmica e com muito humor.Considero ser um dos melhores livros que já li. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Prompt Seller Response *by on Reviewed in Australia 2 June 2020* I previously wrote that I needed to contact the seller as package had not arrived as stated. The Seller responded in 24hrs and explained that some deliveries could not be tracked and there were delays around the pandemic processes. The package has now arrived and the book is fascinating, surreal, engrossing and stimulating – The Master and Margarita. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A brilliant work that keeps you engaged *by on Reviewed in the United States 14 July 2026* (This is a review of the book, not Amazon shopping experience. It was great as always!)When I started reading it, I was not sure where it was going. But it grew on me and finished strong. I think if I re-read, I might enjoy it even more.Even though it is a (semi) fiction, it has a lot of subtexts that are good food for thought. I really liked the parallel narration with Christ's crucifixion. How the author switches from comic and satire (Soviet era) to empathetic and serious (Christ era)One call out, for a non native Russian, too many local references and names might appear a bit confusing - but they don't dilute the essence of the book. ## Frequently Bought Together - The Master and Margarita - Heart of a Dog - A Country Doctor's Notebook --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.at/products/703250559-the-master-and-margarita](https://www.desertcart.at/products/703250559-the-master-and-margarita) --- *Product available on Desertcart Austria* *Store origin: AT* *Last updated: 2026-10-06*
