## Description

Our Wives Under The Sea is the haunting novel from Julia Armfiled, the critically acclaimed author of Salt Slow
. It’s a story of falling in love, loss, grief, and what life there is in the deep, deep sea.
Miri thinks she has got her wife back, when Leah finally returns after a deep sea mission that ended in catastrophe. But It soon becomes clear that Leah may have come back wrong. Whatever happened in that vessel, whatever it was they were supposed to be studying before they were stranded on the ocean floor, Leah has carried part of it with her, onto dry land and into their home.
Memories of what they had before – the jokes they shared, the films they watched, all the small things that made Leah hers – only remind Miri of what she stands to lose. Living in the same space but suddenly separate, Miri comes to realize that the life that they had might be gone.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A surreal tale of love, loss, and grief. Haunting and poetic.
*by on Reviewed in the United States July 30, 2026*

A slow, aching emotional suspense so sinister that you don’t even realize how much water you’ve taken on until you're surrounded. This book isn’t for everyone. If you like clear, fast-paced and plot-driven narratives that resolve, this won’t be for you. If you like characters you can roll around in and who reveal their every nook and cranny, this isn’t for you.If you like lyrical, haunting, ambiguous narratives that take on a poetic, camouflage type quality, then this IS for you. If you like characters who you can only see through a certain prism beam of light, this is for you.A surreal tale of love, loss, grief and its many undulating shapes. I did not even realize how much the story had seeped into my skin until around 70% through. Even though the ending started to become predictable (something I think was intentional, to be experienced in the same way Miri realizes it was all so “inevitable”), it only made the impact more poignant.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ What you need to know
*by on Reviewed in the United States April 22, 2026*

I thought it was a good book, but you have go into it with the right mindset. Some things you should know:1. It's not horror. There's some uncomfy and weird scenarios, but if you're looking for scary, you'll be disappointed. Luckily I went in knowing that and it's just a good book on its own.2. You won't get answers. The entire book is an amazing metaphor for grief. The main character goes through all the stages, and when the book ends, SO MUCH is still unanswered and only a weird, numb pit remains. The main character desperately attempts multiple times to get answers, and just doesn't. However, that's how grief works in real life - no matter how badly you want to understand and have closure, you just might not get it and you simply have to find a way to move on. The author does amazing in this aspect, and I think people miss that point. All that being said, with the right mindset, I thought it was a great, and heartbreaking book!

### ⭐⭐⭐ Felt Disappointed
*by on Reviewed in the United States December 4, 2024*

I'm really struggling with how I feel about this book a week after finishing it, but I think my overall emotion would be disappointment. There are elements I really enjoyed, such as some of the intentional absurdity (the therapist who doesn't seem to react to what the protagonist ever says, the blood dripping from a character's face being called normal, phone calls that never get resolved). I think it also does a really good job exploring grief over your loved ones "haunting" your life while still alive. But other elements really don't work for me. There is no resolution of the various mysteries brought up. I suppose they're not meant to matter, just the exploration of Mira's emotions, but if that were the case then I wish tantalizing plot elements weren't included that made me think the book was going to accomplish more. The horror (and body horror) does not work for me. The aforementioned absurdity I praised starts to lose its impact and the newer horror elements added throughout feel too vague or uninteresting to really grab my attention. There was one reveal in particular that made me feel like it was supposed to be very shocking, but just had me thinking, "so what?"At a certain point while reading, maybe half-way through, I realized that the book does not escalate (or devolve?) despite the chapter titles suggesting you are descending into a horrifying pitch-black depth akin to the ocean. A passage from the start and a passage from the end would feel the same. It started to feel like I was reading the same thing over and over and I began to resent how long the book felt.I really, really wanted to like this book. I even really like elements of the ending. But I didn't feel haunted by it, or scared, or thoughtful. Just disappointed because I felt like it could have been a lot more than what it was.
