As soon as I plugged it in it killed 2 gnats. You wouldn't want to put this in or near a bedroom though. I wouldn't start it up with babies or small children around either. The pop noise it makes when it kills a bug is loud and takes getting used to. It could frighten children into crying fits. I love the sound but it still makes me jump a little too sometimes. I've got mine indoors in my kitchen. Flies and gnats seem to love to congregate there. The door to the garage opens into the kitchen and my HOA insist we keep trash cans in the garage so there's a bug zapper out there too. This brand is new to me but it's wonderful. I actually like the big bulbs. Because I keep them on all the time all summer long bug zappers typically only last for the summer. By fall the bulbs have died or are in the process of dying. I hope this one makes it. I'm considering buying a couple more of these as backups.Update June 6, 2021:I still love this bug zapper however there have been issues. My first one after being plugged in for a few hours, the top bulb started this wave pattern. It was acting like it was about to go out. The bottom bulb was fine. I decided to ask for a replacement unit. I left this one plugged in while I waited on the replacement to arrive. During that time the top bulb quit with the wave so I was gonna keep it and just pay for the replacement. Not so fast... I plugged in the replacement and the top bulb in it isn't working... at all. Not even a flicker. So buyer beware. While i do love the fat bulbs these units use, more killing area, there does seem to be some ongoing issue with the top bulb part of the unit. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't. If it does, for how long is anybody's guess. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Unalived so many mosquitos *by J***R on January 9, 2023* It was the summer of 2022 and all the mosquitoes in south Alabama had come to visit our yard.It seemed to us that the mosquitoes decided that the best place to swarm would be near our front door. Every time we opened the door, about 7,000 mosquitoes flew inside to spend quality time snacking on us. My husband had taken to using a fly swatter and a flashlight and splattered about 439 of the buzzing annoyances before deciding that we needed a better method. He sat and researched "the best bug zapper" for about three whole minutes before ordering this one.When it finally came in the mail, we were elated. This was like Christmas in July. As soon as we plugged it in, we heard a loud POP! The first mosquito had already fell into our trap.Hours later, after hearing the loud popping sound every time a mosquito buzzed itself to it's death, we started to tire of the popping noise. It is loud. And we were slightly annoyed by the loudness of their unfortunate deaths. But it was never as annoying as having mosquitoes all over our house, sucking our blood and leaving itchy bumps in their wake. We got used to the sound.This bug zapper was the source of thousands of mosquito deaths that summer. We were grateful. And although the summer has come and gone, and we haven't seen a mosquito in months now, we still have the bug zapper tucked away, waiting for the return of the summer bugs, and the bloodbath that is sure to follow. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Collection Tray Causing Trouble *by S***N on August 15, 2021* I have three zappers. Two were kept outdoor and one indoor. For some reasons, I found large amount of flies inside the house this summer, even if I kept doors and windows closed with air-conditioning on. I decided to try this open type zapper as all the previous units I possessed are in cylindrical shape.I like this open type as it gives a feeling similar to commercial units. In reality, it appears brighter and with larger area from front and back to attract more flies. If not because of the shallow collection tray, I would give it five stars. All zappers I have do not kill every single fly that entered the unit. The conventional drum type can keep the hurt bugs down the bottom collection tray and they would have eventually died when I clean the try.The collection tray of this unit has two very low raised edges and it is totally open to the front and to the back. I literally saw bugs crawling out from the unit and dropped to ground, causing extra work to clean the floor.I modified it by adding a narrow panel to the front edge of the tray and another panel on the external of the back bottom. The tray would only be able to be pull out from the front.
