As a survival tool, it will last you a lifetime. If you want a ferro rod for starting fires all the time, you can pick those up easily off any website, including Amazon. This is for JIC, not every day use and you would never need to replace the rod as it would start enough fires to last a lifetime. **Q: Is it a pen** A: Lol, no. It is a glass breaker, fire starter and whistle.
