I did not want scratch it so I did NOT try pry it open from the top. After reclosing it I was unable to push it open again, and I'm quite strong, I popped it open again from the underside using a wooden dowel that I banged downward to the floor..Then I siad to self - "go ahead file those damn pins". After several test trials I got the easy opening I wanted. The product is quite superior to a lot of the junk that is out here on the market. Tip: Scan the template on the back side of the instructions so you can easily cut out the template without destroying the instructions on the front page. They aren't hard to open if you just stick a flat blade screwdriver in there and pry it up. I like that they stay shut as I put two of these under my sofas since they have power recliners. It's way better than having a dumb cord running across the floor since my sofas are not against walls. Trimmed a little more on each side and boom fit perfect. When you screw or in it also will synch everything down.
