Deep learningという用語の初出例は1986年（OED online）であるが、現在の意味でよく使われるようになったのは2000年代からか。手元の英和辞典には載ってないが、英辞郎にはある。「深層学習◆人間の脳神経回路の仕組みをモデルにした機械学習手法」と定義している。コンピュータによる音声言語認識、機械翻訳、無人運転などのメカニズムを知る上で欠かせない知識である｡本書は「深層学習入門」「概念の基礎」「脳神経回路：深層学習の基本構成要素」「深層学習小史」「廻旋･周期的な脳神経回路」「学習機能」「深層学習の将来」からなる。巻末には用語集、語句･人名索引、参考文献が付いていて、深層学習（ディープラーニング）概論として申し分のない内容と構成である
