I have purchased many Trendnet USB print servers before for myself and my clients without any problems.I wanted three things to be satisfied.#1 A print server that I could connect to my wire network, then connect to my printer by USB cable. The Trendnet was successful with this requirement.#2 I need to print from any of three Window PCs. Old desktop running Windows XP, a new PC running Windows 7 and a notebook running Windows 7. The Trendnet was successful with this requirement.#3 I wanted to be able a print from any of the PCs in any order without messing around with Trendnet software. I just wanted to use Excel to print to the printer and have the print jobs print. The Trendnet failed at this requirement.I setup the first PC with the Trendnet Control Center utility software and I was able to print. Then I setup the second PC and I had to click a button in the second PCs Trendnet Control Center utility requesting permission to use the printer, then on the first PC I had to access the Trendnet Control Center utility and access the request to print on the second PC. Once you accept permission you can print all you want on the second PC. Then if you want to print on the first PC you have to click on the button requesting permission to print, then on second PC you have to accept … Then if you add a third PC you just multiple the issues when you want to print.I downloaded and read the PDF manual from the Trendnet website. I spoke with tech support for 20 minutes trying to get this printing without any success. They told me just to click on the print utility and request print permission, then to accept it on the second PC. It would be easier to me to just have three USB cables and switch them when I wanted to print. If I wanted a manual way to print I would move the cables.So I am throwing device away and getting a real USB print server that will allow me to print from any of my clients three Window PCs without asking permission to print each time.If the description had told me I would have to use software each time I switched printers. A big attraction is that the device interfaces with the printer's USB port rather than a parallel port. Installation is simple and obvious. Operating the unit requires that specialized software be installed on EVERY computer that wants to use the USB-only capable printer for wheich this unit functions as a so-called server -- but it's NOT a real print server in the sense that, say, HP, would call it a server. More in a moment. A user's guide in PDF form comes on the CD which contains some trivial "in case of trouble" information: "Check all connections", "uninstall and reinstall the software." What is inexcusable is that there is NO discussion of how the printer's software/drivers should be configured. Most USB printers require that you run part of the installation process BEFORE connecting the printer and powering it on and then continuing the installation process. However, if you're using this device, you evidently need to configure the printer to use a TCP/IP port connection. Nowhere is the printer installation and configuration in any version of Windows discussed. They advise only in case of trouble to contact Windows/Apple tech support -- nether of whom now anything about this device. Their web site contains some additional documentation, none of it helpful, and all of it written by someone for whom English is a very foreign language.The "last straw" came when I noticed after trying several strategies for installation was that the software provided for controlling the box would not allow automatic recognition of the device/printer at computer boot-up because, it claimed, that the RAW, TCP and SMB protocols were not recognized by this device. The warning note did not say what it DOES recognize, however.Attempts at getting help via on-line was a tail chasing exercise. I think I was speaking with someone in Taiwan, but I'm not sure.Never could get it to work. There was ZERO communication between the unit and the printer's USB port. Incidentally, there's a note somewhere that "two people can't use the device at the same time. Obvious? What they mean is this print "server" does not cache any additional print jobs that may be submitted to the unit -- the second, third, etc., get an error message and their print job jas to be killed and resubmitted.I'm returning the unit.
