Winner winner chicken dinner - nice pack, nifty little touches

*by S***G on Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2017*

Last year I switched over to a Platypus bladder in the Drafter after having pinhole leaks in the same spot in two bladders from another company. In research for the bladder Platypus came up as a really solid choice and I haven't been let down after more than a year of use, storing in the freezer between uses, etc.I have had a Dakine Drafter 12L pack for 6-7 years and it's zippers started to give up the ghost. In looking around at options I wanted something a little smaller and after looking at a couple of different companies I figured I would give Platypus a look and I'm glad I did. This pack is 10L in storage, comes with a bladder/hose/magnetic retaining clip, etc.I have had a couple of rides on this pack and I'm really happy with my choice. The fit and finish on the pack is really nice and there are a number of little touches that are handy. For example, the straps and zippers are an accent color which makes finding them pretty easy. The magnetic clip for the bladder hose is handy and the bladder compartment has a color coded blue pull on the zipper so I don't keep opening the compartment by accident.I have a Met Parachute helmet and it wasn't really a fit on my Dakine pack but with the Duthie I'm able to strap it to the back of the pack without issue. This pack has an arched frame on the inside so that the pack doesn't sit flush against your back.My Dakine did not have this and after a ride the back of my moisture wicking shirt would be drenched which wasn't the end of the world but it could be a bit below average in cooler weather.I have to admit I was skeptical of the Duthie solving this problem but it works as advertised.I came back from a 3 hour ride in 80 degree heat today and the back of my shirt was slightly damp but not soaked or discolored from sweat. If I walked into a store or restaurant someone standing behind me wouldn't be able to tell that my shirt had any moisture on it at all.Long story short I'm sure you can spend quite a bit more on a pack from brand X or brand Y but why bother really? The Duthie is well made, lighter than my previous pack, comfortable, and doesn't leave my back looking like a sponge after a ride. The only niggle I have with the pack is that I'm not a huge fan of the Platypus bite valve personally after using them on two different periods of time. For me what worked well was to swap in a Hydrapak Blaster bite valve which fits the tube and is something I'm used to using. The Platypus bite valve is a bit too large to easily cram under my full face helmet so your mileage may vary here.

Great hydration pack for mountain biking.

*by M***. on Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2018*

Great pack! Organizes all my necessary bike tools and gear for a long ride easily. Mesh back pannel breaths really well. Shoulder, sternum and hip straps are well padded but not bulky and have elastic bands to keep them tucked so they don’t flap. Nice. The compression straps hold your gear in place well so it doesn’t shift when bouncing over rough stuff or jumping. I had to shorten the hose for the hydration bladder, which was easy except for getting the bite valve on and off the hose. There’s no chance that thing is coming off by mistake. My one concern is that in the event of a major crash that the aluminum supports which run along the frame of the pack can puncture your water bladder, or worse, puncture your back! This seems like an unlikely event, however several companies make packs with CE rated spine protectors for enduro racers. I don’t feel like I need a built in spine protector, but I would like to see a design which has a supportive, breathable frame which won’t deform and poke me in the event of a crash. As a hydration pack for hiking or XC mountain biking this pack is just about perfect. But for high speed, high risk riding I would like a little more peace of mind from the frame.

    Buy this bag

*by J***Z on Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2018*

Way better than my last camelbak. Took this bag on an 8-day bikecamping trip and it was one probably the best piece of gear I brought with. I was continually impressed by the amount of pockets and compartments to stash things in and keep organized. The 3L bladder was enough to hydrate me for a full day and have water at camp, the size really made the different as other friends with 2L bladders ran out.The construction is great, I packed a metric ton of gear inside along with a full 3L bladder and the zippers and seams held beautifully. The waist straps were very handy and accessible while riding, and the helmet holder was solid.I was super impressed overall, cannot recommend enough. I recently tried the rain fly in downpour rains (northern California) and it worked pretty well. It was waterproof, but the top of the bag got wet still from runoff of my helmet while riding—not everyone's problem I know.
