The Cyathea tomentosissima, or Dwarf Tree Fern, is a compact live plant measuring 5 x 5 x 5 cm, weighing 500 g. It flourishes in full sun and requires moderate watering, making it an ideal choice for both seasoned plant lovers and busy professionals. ## Description

Cyathea tomentosissima, rare in production, is a superb compact form of tree fern. It is native to much of the Antipodes and Tasmania and has been around for 144 milliion years, give or take a year or two!  As tree ferns go, it is in fact a relative newcomer, with many tree ferns having been on earth for up to 340 million years. Renown for its compact growth, woolly bristles and burnt orange scales, that run right down the midribs on the pinnules (frond side branches),of the fronds, that will themselves grow up to around a 1.2mtrs. in length. It is a fantastic specimen for the experienced or adventurous gardener. It rarely grows taller than 2.5 mtrs, less in the Uk. and is more drought tolerant than most tree ferns. It is however, not as hardy as the Dicksonias and there is some doubt as to its true level of hardiness. There are relaible reports of young plants withstanding temperatures as low as -3C in the USA and I suspect that it would tolerate a touch of transient frost in the Uk. Older specimens are generally hardier. That said, if you wish to grow this lovely tree fern you should be prepared to give it full frost protection during the winter. Other than temperature, they are not difficult. A moist, well drained soil or compost in a sunny location is best. These ferns will tolerate drought if not in hot sunlight, but best to keep moist to wet in summer and on the dry side in winter. Will grow well indoors, provided it is in a well lit, but cooler location. A lovley plant, the compact growth of which makes it ideal for the patio or where space is more limited. As always we recommend the use of a controlled release fertiliser as hungry plants are poor performers. A 8-9 month formulation appplied each spring would be just fine!
