I had heard how quiet these mics were supposed to be, so I couldn't understand why mine was so noisy (same as you describe). I did a lot of research and talked to people close to the pro-audio hardware world, and here's what they told me: CAD is currently having some quality-control problems and far too many mics are leaving their facility with noise issues. You can try to work with them to fix your mic, but you're looking at lots of time on the phone, and the hassle of shipping your mic around the country just to get what you already paid for. When you also consider how many great options there are for superb microphones in the same price range and application, suddenly it just doesn't make much sense. I was advised to simply send my mic back to Amazon as "dead on arrival", and look at another brand. That's what I did. I am now the proud owner of an AT 4047 and couldn't be happier. Wish I had better news, but CAD needs to get their act together or else get out of the business. They have some formidable competition now who are turning out some very nice microphones with no issues. This is not a mic I have used often - I own one of their tube mics - but I have worked with it in studios occasionally with no issue. It's quite bright but that can help with intelligibility on audiobooks. I haven't used the more expensive NT1 - the newer black one. Reports indicate it's a superior mic but because the response is more even it may not flatter your voice as much without EQ.
