PES 2008 came out with the first signs of trouble, Konami was trying to get closer to Fifa, maybe to try and sell as much as them, but for that they compromised on quality. PES 2008 was a total disappointment. 2009 came out and immediately I could see improvement, specially with the speed of the game and a few features. On the PS2, the biggest let down is the Champions League feature missing. The action on the game has kept the annoying super human skills on the CPU controlled players, specially when it comes to defense and their ability to become The Flash and get to the ball before you, even if you're controlling Messi. Also, since 2008 the difference in between Amateur and Regular has gaped and one is too easy and the other too hard for those wanting to have some fun with a normal challenge. Beating top teams in regular has become like a trip to the gym, you sweat and you hurt and you might get a draw. Now, the reason for my 3 stars for the game and 5 for the fun is the Become a Legend feature. I think we all agree is the most addictive football gameplay ever, to put ourselves out there as a young player and conquer the world of football, mainly by yourself. This is a fairly solid incarnation of the series bearing in mind most of Konami's efforts are going into the Next-Gen versions. The 'Become a Legend' mode is a nice idea but (as anyone who's played as 'fixed' on the old PESs while the comp controls the rest of the team)has very slow gameplay and frustrating as the AI doesn't learn how you like to play and often does irritating things like giving the ball away cheaply from a pass and wandering into opposition players with the ball at their feet. Ultimately though if you want a footy game for when the boys (or girls) come round and don't want to/can't fork out for an Xbox 360 or PS3 then this is more than adequate and capable of filling hours with multiplayer fun.
