## Description

Review: Great for books, good customer service! - One of the very best experiences ever. I'm trying to clean many books that were in a fire, and these work very well for that. They don't work well if the soot has already been ground in by trying other methods. Worked on glass, wood paneling, painted drywall, small items like candlesticks, etc. If wood or stone is not sealed/finished, then it won't work as well, but you can often use soap, water, and an old brush for that kind of object. In some cases, if the book was near the ceiling, the actual binding had begun to smoulder (just short of bursting into flame), and the blackened part would not clean because the actual fibers had been altered, not merely covered from the outside. I needed more (there were many books) and made the order late at night. When a box of smaller sponges arrived, I thought "maybe I found some small ones?" and before I had time to open them or look at it, I got a phone call from their customer service. They had shipped the small ones in error, were sending the ones I ordered, and asked me to just keep the small ones, which are not for soot but handy for pet care and painting projects, etc. The soot sponges work well, and I have used them before, so I am pleased about them. I will say the only thing they could do to improve the product is offer the exact same soot sponge, only cut into a dozen smaller slices. When working with paper and other small things, I end up cutting the soot sponge for a smaller thing to handle and more surface area. Others have written that they can be cleaned and used again, so I may try that. I wonder if I can get them clean enough for use on paper. Dishwasher? Really thoughtful, proactive service...not an email or a letter, but a phone call. Way to go, Sponge Producers!
Review: Doesn’t work - Didn’t remove any soot from fireplace. A magic eraser works 100% better

## Questions & Answers

**Q: where do you get the UNGER attachment to attach sponge to pole shown on manufacture web site?**
A: I was curious so I went searching and found it on www.webstaurantstore.com. it is under the window cleaning tools and accessories. It is called an Unger Fix10 Fixi-clamp pole attachment. Item # 905FIX10. 22.77 is the price. Maybe typing in just that name will get you to some other sites/Ebay or amazon.

**Q: Will this work on a car that was previously owned by a smoker? And what exactly is is made from**
A: I bought this to use on the plaster walls of my home, but it was not very effective. The soot residue was greasy in my application. so I just went with the old fashioned way of water rags and a little dish soap. It took several buckets. I was disappointed in the sponge and would not recommend it. It appears to be similar to a sponge soft consistency. I purchased a vehicle that was smoked in years ago and had to wait years for the smell to go away, use febreze if you can stand the perfumy smell and magic erasers are my favorite, plus some pine sol in your water and wash down the interior. If you want perfection get it detailed but ask the business first if they can eliminate the smell that's their business and they are good at it. In my area a thorough detailing with carpets and upholstery being cleaned is about $150 or less.

**Q: Is this the same as a chemical sponge**
A: Yes, this is exactly the same as chemical sponges. Although oddly enough there are no chemicals in it. It is a sponge made of natural volcanized rubber. Hope this helps!

**Q: will it clean soot inside dryer drum?**
A: It will remove soot that is like a film substance. It will not remove dark burnt marks or stains. It absorbs topical dirt/ soot from any surface that will release it. Hopefully this helps. Good luck with your project.

### ⭐ Doesn’t work
*by A***R on June 30, 2026*

Didn’t remove any soot from fireplace. A magic eraser works 100% better

### ⭐⭐⭐ Works better on books
*by K***N on January 8, 2014*

Not quite what I expected after reading others reviews on it. I was under the impression that this sponge would do such a good job that I would be able to see the clean spot in between the soot on the wall. It does not work that well, but it does seem to be picking up soot because it turns black. You have to keep cutting off the black parts of the sponge otherwise it will just smear the soot around and you will have a bigger area to clean. After many attempts and not getting the results that I expected, I found it easier to just paint over the soot with a slightly tinted paint which blended in nicely with the aged coloration of the walls. I only painted over as a quick fix since I was hosting Thanksgiving dinner at my house and didn't have the time to really get dirty with soot removal. If you want to clean the soot off the walls without repainting, the magic eraser works very well. Make sure that you have a dry towel to wipe the run downs with because it cleans extremely well. I did find that the soot remover sponge works well when cleaning books.
