This set has a palm handle. The micro sets come in even smaller sizes such as 1.5mm and have pencil grips. For pencil grip micro gouges I prefer Dockyard tools. This set is great for slightly larger size with palm handles. **Q: Are the blades removable from the wooden handles?** A: Flexcut makes some sets with removable blades. This is not one unless you want to destroy the handles in the process. To look for the removable handle set, look for one with many blades and a few plastic handles. **Q: the most recent review is not so good...was this an aberration or did they change their manufacturing?** A: I find Flexcut to be the best available chisels. I compared them to new Swiss, European and Japanese chisels as well as my grandfather's American hand forged Buck Brother's chisels. Flexcut simply have a smoother interior finish than hand forged American, Swiss, European or the Japanese chisels I have sharpened. While sharpening flattens the outside of a chisel, it is much harder to flaten the interior of a V or U chisel. Especially the smaller ones. If the inside is striated or less than perfectly flat, the sharpened edge is undesireably rough and irregular. Yes, I have various shapes of white hard and black Arkansas whetstones, but never the exact shape. The mirror smooth Flexcut can simply be stropped on the Flexcut stropping tool for a super edge. They are slightly harder than Swiss tools, but not the glass hard easy to chip Japanese tools. I found the Mini-Palm set to be perfect for linoleum block carving and small wood detailing.
