The scratcher head is metal and has good scratching power. The handle is solid wood so you can add as much pressure as needed for relief, unlike those telescopic back scratchers which bend and it seems you get never enough pressure to fight that itch. It's good looking and sturdy and with normal use it should hold up a long time. My oldest one is over 3 years old now and still scratches and looks like new. The attached hanger ring dangling at the bottom end is a nice idea but if you don't hang it somewhere it's just annoying, but it's easy to remove.
