Hercules is a fairly tangible and realistic interpretation and portrayal of the story of Hercules based on one simple concept, "All myths have some sort of basis in reality," and as a concept, the writers, producers, and actors undoubtedly had a lot of fun making this film. With backstory and ACTUAL CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT ( yes, they actually have more than decent character development for this film ), being such an important part of the viewing experience, "The Extended Cut" is essential because without the extended scenes, a lot of the elements that really drive the heart of the story home are otherwise missing. Essentially "The Extended Cut" should be regarded moreso as "The Whole Movie" when it comes to this film. Perhaps because the cast was well above the B movie level and the script and story lines were enhanced rather than detracted by the special effects. The result was an unexpected and very pleasant surprise. Dwayne Johnson shows he can match his star power with the likes of well seasoned actors such as Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, and John Hurt. The humor was an added spice and the pacing was dead on, for the most part. Top notch stunt work, well coached secondary actors and extras and believable settings fleshed out the story in and unexpected and compelling way. Humanizing Hercules and yet honoring the myth puts this version of the famous tale well above the host of other comic book cardboard versions of Hercules that came before. Ian McShane was particularly delicious in his running commentary and sardonic humor.
