Also, the diameter is 5/8". **Q: do you have to buy wheels separate or does it come with two** A: It comes complete with the 2 wheels and ready to use after attaching the shield and supports to the body. Easy project. I am very pleased with the grinder. **Q: Can I use this for polishing brass?** A: I think yes. I use the fabric wheel for polishing the surface of carving chisels. **Q: Can the guards be removed to allow for polishing larger items?** A: I removed all my guards for soft cloth polishing and buffing. However, if you use the grinder wheels made of stone, you should absolutely keep the guards on, including the spark arrestor thingie in front. Sometimes, these stone wheels may shatter and flying rocks will hit you... unless those guards are in place. I used my buffing wheels without guards with no problem. You cannot polish with guards on.
