The process was invented by Hans Karreman, a Dutch goldsmith. Delft Clay is much finer than casting sand, providing remarkably sharp and highly detailed castings in gold, silver, copper-based alloys, pewter, etc. Castings require very little finishing work. Once you have cast your piece, the Delft Clay can be re-used. Since this is a cold-molding process, molds can be made from patterns composed of wood, wax, epoxy, plastics, and, of course, metal. Because this is a type of sand casting, it is best suited to producing castings without pronounced undercuts. Made in Holland. 2 Ring Frames - Circular aluminum used for casting clay. USA A Delft Clay mold is created in these steps: 1. Fill and compact the Clay into one half of the aluminum ring frame 2. Remove excess clay with a straight edge (e.g. a flexible steel ruler) 3. Press your original pattern halfway into the clay. 4. Brush Mica Powder or talcum powder over this surface of the mold 5. Install the other half of the aluminum ring frame, fill with clay and compact 6. Open the ring frame and remove the pattern 7. Carve out a pouring channel and vents 8. Review: If cost is a concern consider comparing Delft to Petrobond to determine if the latter provides an adequate result. - I got the results I had desired which is why I had chosen Delft over Petrobond but was not so excited about how expensive the Delft Clay is, and since I am a very sceptical person from experience, and didn't have any Petrobond to compare it to I was a bit worried that I had been sent the latter cheaper material in place of authentic Delft which I am still not sure of, however I did achieve the desired results, and the product is reusable for the most part, and enjoyable to work with. Below are pics of the open pour silver ingot, and two wax seal pendants I made using this material. * Note that I have not yet added the air vents in the Elephant mold casts and on the first pendant I had kept the resulting spurs which were the result of the excess metal flowing into the vent groves, and achieving a full cast. I removed and fully sanded away the spurs on the second cast. I strongly recommend large vent holes above the vent groves, and minimum of six vent groves, and much more metal than needed in order to push the molten metal through to fill the mold, and achieve a full cast, as the result of not doing so can be seen in the last photo which shows my initial failed pour. Review: This sticky, gritty crud is the bomb!!! - Hey! This is the real deal. Works beautifully. I’m a little more than a novice but I can tell you this stuff is legit and works beautifully for casting silver etc. Shipped fast. Tastes great...oh, wait. Don’t eat it. Haha. I have experience with lost wax casting so I figured that I would give this a go! Now, this stuff is AMAZING! Just like lost wax, if there is a finger print or a file mark in the original, it WILL show up in the cast. If you are a noob like me, this is the stuff for DETAIL in your piece. If you just want to do a basic smooth part, get some Petrobond, very similar to this but not as fine of sand. Love the rings this comes with, going to purchase more.
