## Description

For the first time in brilliant Hi-Def, this action-filled western stars John Wayne as Big Jake McCandles, a husband who hasn’t seen his wife (Maureen O'Hara) in over 9 years. But he returns home after his grandson is kidnapped by a vicious outlaw gang. While the law gives chase in rickety automobiles, Jake saddles up with an Indian scout (Bruce Cabot) and a box of money - even though paying a ransom isn’t how Jake plans to exact good old frontier justice. Spiced with humor and first-class gunfights, this is a vivid depiction of the last days of the wild frontier.

Review: Big Jake is definetely one of Duke's finest and best films - I have no words to express how delighted I am to have my favorite film in the best possible quality. Big Jake is definetely one of Duke's finest and best films and one of his most popular ( see IMDB) to the point of becoming John Wayne last big hit in the 70's. At the time of it's original release, Big Jake topped the Box Office for 3 weeks and allowed Duke to be N°1 of the top 10 for the 4th and last time in 1971. For true Duke's fans, it's hardly surprising when you consider the crème de la crème worked on this film : William Clothier (Photography), Elmer Bernstein (Music), Harry Julian and Rita M.Fink (Screenplay), Albert Withlock (Visual effects), Cliff Lyons ( Second unit director - stunts), Howard Jensen (Special effects)... for the crew. And for the cast, John Wayne at his best and definetely in one of his best performances ( even better than inTrue Grit ) that could have brought him an Oscar if True Grit had not been so close to Big Jake, the great Richard Boone and Gregg Palmer's machete psycho both as Duke's best foes ever to face him, Maureen O'Hara in the short but powerful part of John Wayne's estranged wife, Bruce Cabot as his indian friend, Harry Carey Jr as an evil dirty old man, Patrick and Ethan Wayne as his son and grandson, Chris Mitchum as another son and a galore of familar faces like John Agar, Hank Worden, Chuck Robertson, Chuck Hayward, Jim Davis, Roy Jensen, Jerry Gatlin, etc... And of course, Dog, John Wayne's dog and best friend, always ready to attack on his master's command. The blu-ray is a pure treat with a wonderful PQ and cristal clear sound to the point that Big Jake never looked so good. After the VHS and the dvd, it's like watching a truly brand new movie in full HD. Details you missed before appear clearly in the light of this wonderful blu-ray. A must have for all Duke's fans.
Review: Long Overdue Reward - When you consider the size and depth of the body of work made by this giant of the movies it is a sin he did not receive his oscar some time before this movie. But if you had to choose one movie to award an oscar for, to this giant of the western genre then this would be it . An all time classic. Reigns in his teeth, both hands holding firearms and through gritted teeth he snarls "Fill your hands you son of a bitch" and rides into the body of 4 armed foes. A great scene and one to be watched again and again. R.I.P. Duke.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Big Jake - Entertaining Western in which John Wayne proves, contrary to popular belief, that he ain't dead yet!
*by V***R on 11 February 2011*

This rather interesting and entertaining film stars an ageing John Wayne as Big Jake McCandles, rancher estranged from his family for nearly 20 years, but brought back by the news that the grandson he has never met has been kidnapped and a `tough and disagreeable' person is required to deliver the ransom. It's as much of a family film and road trip as a Western - joining McCandles on his hunt are two of his estranged sons, and slowly they all learn respect for one another. This leads to much humour, soul searching and baring and some great scenes. It is also a reflction on ageing, it shows Wayne and his contemporaries growing old and struggling to cope with a changing West. The action element is not forgotten however, and the various showdowns and shootouts are well done and thrilling. The big finale is especially well done. John Wayne does what he does best - ambles around hitting and shooting things with a great deal of grace and charm. His charisma is, as always, magnetic. Richard Boone makes a great villain, totally ruthless and cunning. All in all an entertaining hour and a half of Western with action, humour and John Wayne on form. Perfect viewing for a wet Sunday afternoon.
