As one of his last projects, though, Donuts is a fitting reflection of Dilla's creativity and an apt tribute (however unintentional) to a career spent as the quintissential producer's producer. Unlike some of Dilla's previous instrumental albums, such as Welcome To Detroit , the songs here are less finished and polished pieces and more caught up in mid-creative motion. Unlike the soft, filtered sound he was known for in the mid-1990s, for Donuts he leaves a variety of soul and jazz loops in plain view but splices and reworks them as a set of sonic jigsaw puzzles. Spontaneous but not sloppy, the capture the late producer at his best--in the throes of his own imagination, each song poised with endless possibilities. --Oliver Wang After quietly serving as a member of a Tribe Called Quest's production team and scoring hits for Busta Rhymes, de la Soul and Pharcyde, Detroit producer Jay Dee became known as a major hip hop prospect by the end of the 90s. The hip-hop community took notice of his no-frills, breakbeat-heavy hip-hop style as he helped craft albums for Common, Q Tip, and the debut for his own group Slum Village. Jay Dee went solo not long after changing his name to J Dilla, he joined the Stones Throw roster in 2003 formed jaylib wit hfellow producer Madlib and released the album CHAMPION SOUND. Althought J Dilla is repsected mainly for his instrumetnal work, he has never crafted an entired albums meatn to be released instrumetnal until now. DONUTS is accessible without being typical or easily defined: it's hip hop without MCs, eelctronic music that at times sounds like a 70s soul mixtape. Dilla's life and love of music, where he seemingly redefined or at least nudged hip-hop into a new direction with his singularly unique cutting technique. The story of Donuts is both triumphant and tragic, as Dilla finished the album while dying from a serious blood disorder. The album was released only days before his death at 32. Dilla's work as a producer with rappers and singers in the late 90s and early 2000s is amazing, yet Donuts is Dilla alone with his records. Although there have been other Dilla collections of his lost beats that were released posthumously, Donuts is one of the only albums that bears his name. Donuts is not only a unique piece of art- an album that really sounds like nothing before it, but it is also just a lot of fun. I've only previously listened to this album on headphones, and I think that is one of the preferred methods since the album is loaded with samples and loops. However, listening to this record was a new experience, as it sounded like the samples and vocals were pushed a little further to the front, allowing me to focus more on enjoying these sounds. Beyond the enjoyment of trying to figure out where or what these samples mean, the album also has a unifying theme, where the end track is the beginning, just like a loop or a donut. The last track is the intro, leading to this kind of infinite quality. One of my favorite songs is "Bye", which just gives me chills to hear the sample, and to think about how this was one of Dilla's last statements. Just an incredible album and one that you can sit down and listen to as a whole. Really glad to finally have this on vinyl.
