Yes. Skylanders portals are backwards compatible. From personal experience, Spyro Portal worked with Spyro gameGiants Portal worked with Spyro and Giants gamesSwap Force Portal worked with Spyro, Giants and Swap Force gamesTrap Team worked with Spyro, Giants, Swap Force and Trap Team gamesI've moved the portals between WII, WII U and PS3 consoles. I'm told Xbox requires a platform specific portal.

This is set with disc and figures.

Do you need swap force characters to play the game? in other words if you get the game disc by itself, can you beat the game with just giants' guys?

In theory yes you can. Not really worth playing the game without the Swapping characters. There are 16 swapping figures, 2 of each element, and 2 of each skill. You need one of each element and one of each skill.
